A Northern City Revitalizing Its Future Through Innovation and Investment

Flin Flon, located on the border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, is advancing a multi-faceted strategy to foster economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance its tourism sector. With a history rooted in mining and a vibrant cultural identity, the city is now focused on positioning itself as a hub for innovation and investment.
The city has launched initiatives to rejuvenate its historic downtown. Beautification projects, including murals and art installations, are reshaping Main Street’s atmosphere. A Business Storefront Improvement Grant provides matching funds to local businesses for facade enhancements, fostering an inviting and dynamic commercial environment. Tourism development is also a priority, with plans to expand trail systems, attract outdoor enthusiasts, and install oversized photo chairs marking the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border to engage visitors.
Flin Flon’s airport supports regional economic and medical needs. Recent terminal renovations, including updated flooring, LED lighting, and improved accessibility, have modernized the facility. Further infrastructure upgrades are planned to enhance passenger experience and support increased aviation activity. The city is also addressing challenges related to land availability by working to acquire Crown land for diversified development opportunities.
M Richard and Associates (MRA) advanced Flin Flon’s investment strategy by developing Invest FDC, an award-winning Investment Attraction Toolkit. This toolkit includes community profiles, business cases, and web tools to attract investment in mining, tourism, forestry, and clean energy. MRA also partnered with municipalities to launch Discover FDC, a tourism portal highlighting regional attractions. In 2022, both initiatives won the Saskatchewan Economic Development Alliance (SEDA) Award for Excellence in Marketing Innovation.
By revitalizing downtown, expanding tourism, and leveraging innovative investment tools, Flin Flon is well-positioned to attract new businesses, residents, and visitors. These efforts reflect a commitment to sustainable growth and economic diversification, ensuring the city remains a vibrant and resilient northern community.
